When repair isn't the right answer

Garage Door Replacement & Installation

We're repair specialists first: most doors can be fixed, and that's what we'll recommend. When a door is genuinely beyond economical repair, ASAP Garage Door installs a proper replacement anywhere in Greater Montreal: we measure on-site and give you a firm written quote, free and with no obligation.

Our honest-mechanic rule

Should I repair or replace my garage door?

Every call starts the same way: a certified technician inspects your door and gives you a firm price for the repair, free of charge. If the repair makes sense, that's what we do. We only bring up replacement when fixing the door truly isn't worth your money, and we'll show you why before you spend a cent.

Decision guidance

When does replacement actually make sense?

We won't tell you to replace a door that can be fixed. These are the situations where a new door is genuinely the better call.

Structural or panel damage

A bent frame, or multiple panels caved in or cracked beyond a clean patch. Past that point a repair won't hold, and the whole door needs to come out.

A door that's decades old

Parts get harder to find the older a door gets, and very old doors weren't built to today's safety standards. When repairs start costing more just to source parts, replacement is often the more honest answer.

The same failure, again and again

One broken spring is a repair. A third breakdown on the same worn-out door in a year is a sign the door itself is done, and the repair bills are adding up faster than a new door would cost.

Rust through the metal

Surface rust on the bottom edge can often be treated. Rust that has eaten into the steel, or weakened the panels around the hinges, can't be patched. Road salt makes the bottom panel the first place to look.

A cold, drafty garage

If the garage is attached to your home or has a room above it, a thin uninsulated door lets winter in. New seals sometimes fix a draft. An insulated door is the real upgrade.

Failing safety sensors

Photo-eye sensors that no longer work, or an opener too old to have them, are a safety issue, not an inconvenience. Often they can be repaired on their own. If the door is also worn out, replacing both can make sense.

Choosing your door

What to look for in a door built for Montreal

Montreal asks a lot of a garage door: freezing winters, road salt, big temperature swings and summer sun. Here is what to compare.

Insulated steel

Steel is the practical default here: durable, stable through big temperature swings and low on upkeep. The doors in our collection are 26-gauge steel with polyurethane insulation.

R-value in plain words

R-value is the rating used for attic and wall insulation: the higher the number, the better the door resists heat passing through. Our collection is rated R-16. It matters most when the garage is attached to the house.

Weather seals

A door that seals well stops wind-driven cold air, often a bigger problem than heat through the panel. Check the bottom, side and top seals. Worn seals can be replaced without replacing the door.

Windows and glass

Windows bring daylight into the garage and change the look from the street. You choose an insert style, then the glass: clear, acid frosted or black tinted. If heat matters, ask us how much glass makes sense.

Colours and finishes

Pick a colour that suits your brick, siding and trim. The collection runs from white and almond to charcoal and black, plus woodgrain and walnut finishes. Very dark colours tend to show road salt more than light ones.

Start to finish

What happens on an installation

No surprises on install day. This is the whole sequence, from the first measurement to the walkthrough.

  1. 01

    Measure

A certified local technician measures the opening: width, height, headroom and side room. No quote without it.

  2. 02

    Quote

You get one firm written price covering the door, hardware, springs sized to the new weight and removal of the old door. It is free, with no obligation.

  3. 03

    Order

Once you approve, the door is ordered to your measurements and the options you confirmed. There is usually a wait before install day, so ask us for the timing.

  4. 04

    Out with the old

The spring tension is released safely, then the old panels, tracks and hardware come down. All of it leaves with us.

  5. 05

    In with the new

We install the new door and tracks, balance the springs to its weight and fit the weather seals. Usually a half day, removal included.

  6. 06

    Opener pairing

Your opener is reconnected, or a new one is fitted. We set the travel limits and closing force, test the safety sensors and pair your remotes and keypad.

  7. 07

    Walkthrough

We test the door with you, show you the manual release and how to check the sensors, and answer your questions. 90-day guarantee on our work.

Openers

Opener options in plain language

A new door does not always need a new opener: if yours runs well and its photo-eye sensors work, it can usually be reconnected.

Chain drive

A metal chain pulls the door along the rail. Strong and straightforward, the long-standing standard, but also the noisiest, which you will notice if a bedroom is above or beside the garage.

Belt drive

A reinforced belt replaces the chain. It runs smoother and quieter, so it suits a garage attached to the house.

Side-mount

The motor mounts beside the door instead of on a ceiling rail. That keeps the ceiling clear, which helps when headroom is tight or you want storage overhead.

Battery backup

A built-in battery keeps the opener working through a power outage. Without one, the red manual release cord lets you lift the door by hand.

Smartphone control

A connected opener lets you open, close and check the door from your phone, and often lets you share access with family. It needs a Wi-Fi signal that reaches the garage.

Not sure which suits your garage? Call 514-701-8612 and we will talk it through. If your opener is acting up today, see our opener repair page.

Installation: fair questions

How long does installation take?

The install itself is usually about a half day, with the old door removed in the same visit. The longer part is the wait between approving your quote and install day, because the door is ordered to your measurements.

Can you install an opener on my existing door?

In most cases, yes. The door has to be in good shape first: balanced, running smoothly on sound tracks, with springs that are not worn out. An opener is not meant to lift a poorly balanced door, so we sort that out first. Then we fit the opener, set it up and test the safety sensors. Ask us about opener options such as belt or chain drive, battery backup and smartphone control.

Do you take away the old door?

Yes. Removal of the old door is included in your firm written price, so there is no bin or truck to book. The panels, tracks and hardware all leave with us. If there is anything you want to keep, tell the technician before it comes down.

Do you install in winter?

Yes, we install through the Quebec winter. The opening is exposed to the cold for a few hours, so keep the cars out and expect a cooler garage. Please clear snow and ice from in front of the door. In a heavy storm or an extreme cold snap, we may suggest moving the day: a rushed install helps nobody.

Not sure if your door can be saved?

Tell us what's wrong and we'll give you an honest answer (repair or replace), free of charge.
