What's actually happening

Why won't my garage door move?

Garage door springs (torsion springs mounted above the door, or extension springs running along the tracks) do the heavy lifting. They counterbalance the door's full weight so the opener, or you by hand, only has to move it, not lift it. When a spring breaks, that counterbalance is gone: the door becomes dead weight, which is why it slams down, won't lift, or stalls halfway.

Springs fail from ordinary wear: most are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, and Montreal's temperature swings speed that up. A broken spring on its own doesn't damage anything else immediately, but a door that's forced open on a broken spring puts serious strain on the cables, opener and tracks, turning a one-part fix into a bigger repair.

Springs are under extreme tension. This is not a DIY repair.

A garage door spring stores enough force to cause serious injury if it releases while someone is working on it. We say this plainly to every customer: don't try to loosen, remove or replace a spring yourself. Leave the door where it is and call us.

Check the signs

How to tell a garage door spring is broken

Two or more of these together usually mean a broken spring. Leave the door where it is, keep children and pets out of the garage, and call us. Earlier warning signs are in our guide to the seven warning signs a spring is about to break.

Why now

Why springs break on the first cold morning

If your spring went on the first cold snap of autumn, the cold only finished the job. Every spring has a limited number of open-close cycles in it, and an old one has almost no margin left.

Cold takes what's left. Steel contracts and forgives less when it flexes. Lubricant on the spring and tracks thickens, so the door is harder to move and the spring works harder on every lift. A spring that was fine in August can let go in October.

If your door is old, have the spring inspected before a freezing morning does it for you. More cold-weather causes are in why a garage door won't close in the cold.

Know your springs

Torsion springs vs extension springs

Torsion springs

Mounted on a shaft above the door opening, twisting as the door moves. A break often shows as a gap in the coil.

Extension springs

Run along the tracks on each side, stretching as the door moves. Many have a safety cable through them to contain a broken spring.

Why both springs are replaced together

Many doors have two springs working as a pair. They went in together and have done the same cycles, so when one breaks, the other is just as worn and now carries the whole door. Replace only one and the door can tilt, with a real chance of a second emergency visit weeks later. On a two-spring door we replace both, and tell you what we see first.

A repair we won't coach

Why this isn't a do-it-yourself repair

This is the one repair we won't walk you through. A wound spring stores a huge amount of energy. If a winding bar slips or the wire gives way, it releases all at once, and the bar, the spring or nearby hardware can become projectiles. Manufacturer installation manuals warn against untrained spring work.

With the springs disconnected, the door also loses its counterbalance, and its full weight can drop on whoever is underneath. Stay clear of the spring, keep children and pets out of the garage, and call us. More in why you should never repair a spring yourself.

Spring repair: fair questions

Can I replace a broken garage door spring myself?

We'd tell you not to, and we mean it. A wound torsion spring holds enough stored force to cause serious injury if it's mishandled, and the tools to do it safely aren't something most homeowners have. It's the one repair on this site we won't walk you through. Call us and we'll come do it properly.

Why did my spring break?

Almost always ordinary wear. Springs are rated for a set number of open-close cycles, and Montreal's freeze-thaw swings shorten that further. Age, not a single mistake, is the usual cause.

Will you replace one spring or both?

Depends on what we find on-site. Springs are usually installed (and age) in pairs, so if one has failed the other is often close behind. We'll tell you honestly what we see and recommend accordingly, not just replace what broke.

How much does a broken spring repair cost?

The visit to inspect and diagnose is free. You get a firm price on the spot, before any work starts, with no surprises after.

Is a broken spring an emergency?

It's usually fine to leave overnight if the door is fully down and closed. But don't force it open or closed on a broken spring. If it's stuck partway, treat it like our stuck-door page and call us the same way.

How long does a spring replacement take?

Once the technician is on-site with the right spring, it's usually done on the spot, in the same visit. We don't promise a number of minutes, because it depends on your door and what the inspection turns up.

Can I open the door manually with a broken spring?

We'd rather you didn't. With the spring gone, you'd be lifting the door's full weight by hand, and it can drop fast if your grip slips. If the door is fully closed and a vehicle is stuck inside, the emergency release cord disconnects the opener, but only use it with a second person helping. Never pull it if the door is open or stuck partway, because it can fall.

How long does a new spring last?

It depends on the spring's cycle rating and how often you use the door: one cycle is one open and one close. We match the new spring to your door's weight and cycle rating, and our work is guaranteed for 90 days.

Do you have springs in the truck?

We carry the most common sizes, so we can often replace the spring on the first visit. But springs are matched to each door's weight and size, and no truck carries every size. We'll confirm on the call whether we have the right one.

Spring broken right now?

Don't force the door. We answer 24/7 and a certified local technician calls you back within minutes.
