If the spring just went: leave the door where it is, do not run the opener, and keep everyone out from under it. A spring under tension holds enough energy to injure. It is the one repair we ask people not to attempt.

Older stock, older spring systems
A lot of garages on the island were built before 1960, and a good number still run the hardware they were built with. That matters for springs. Older single doors here often use extension springs, the long ones stretched along each side track, rather than the torsion bar you see above the opening on newer builds.
Extension springs fail differently. They tend to snap rather than unwind, and without a containment cable the broken half can travel. If you have a garage off a back lane in Rosemont or Villeray and the door just dropped, do not stand under it and do not try to lift it.
Access is the other Montreal specific. Plenty of these garages open onto a ruelle with no room to park a truck at the door. Our techs work these lanes constantly and carry the job in when they have to, so a tight approach is not a reason we cannot come today.

Call 514-701-8612Yes. Lane access is normal for us on the island. Tell us when you call and the tech will plan the approach and carry in what he needs.
Look above the door. A torsion system is a bar with one or two springs wound around it, mounted above the opening. Extension springs are long and thin and run along the horizontal tracks on each side. Older Montreal singles are usually extension.
Almost certainly. A spring is what counterbalances the weight, so when it goes the door becomes its full dead weight, which on an older wood door can be well over 150 pounds. Leave it down and call us.
If the door runs a pair, we recommend replacing both. They were installed the same day and have taken the same number of cycles, so the second one is usually not far behind. We will tell you what we see before you decide.
